Aina Muceniece (March 23, 1924 – February 14, 2010), Dr.habil.med., Latvian scientist, immunologist, Emeritus Scientist, inventor of anticancer drug RIGVIR. Honorary member of the Latvian Association of Oncologists, received Cross of Recognition for meritorious service to the Latvian Republic. ==Life and work== Aina Muceniece was born in Katlakalns, Latvia, graduated Vilis Olavs school in Riga and worked as a nurse during the Second World War in Yaroslav, USSR. After the war, she studied medicine at Latvian State University, where she received doctor's degree.〔http://viro.lv/aina_muceniece_en.html〕 Started her scientific career in A. Kirhenshtein Institute of Microbiology (Latvian Academy of Sciences), first as senior laboratory assistant, after as senior research associate. In 1960s, she discovered the phenomenon of viruses able to destroy cancerous cells and started researching this phenomenon. In 1965, Virotherapy Laboratory was founded in A. Kirhenshtein Institute of Microbiology, A.Muceniece became head of the laboratory and led it until 1989. During this period, various trials of RIGVIR were held in the laboratory.〔http://www.virotherapy.eu/history.php〕 Also worked at Pauls Stradiņš Hospital and National Oncology Center as immunology consultant.
